Brandon Johnson
Brandon grew up in Arizona and earned his first participation ribbon in the City Summer Swim League at age seven. Through high school he worked as a lifeguard and taught swim lessons between double practices. He continued his swim career at Lake Forest College, earning All-Conference distinctions.
While finishing his dissertation in Cell Physiology, Brandon served as the Head Age Group Coach at Los Altos Mountain View Aquatics. In his short time, he guided developing swimmers who could barely make a legal stroke achieve their first A times. Coaching was not only a way for him to share his love for the sport, but also an opportunity to let emerging swimmers discover self-confidence, establish personal fitness goals, and find a place within a team environment.
After graduate school, Brandon decided to pursue swimming full time with Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics, and competed on the FINA World Cup 10K Open Water Circuit. During this time, Brandon was also the Pacific Region Coach for the FAST Foundation. He trained and guided swimmers ranging in age between 8 – 12 years to swim from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco. He continues to enjoy guiding the youngest swimmers as they battle The Bay and do the impossible.
Brandon has explored many professional fields and has gained a rich array of experiences. Most recently Brandon worked as a scientist at the University of Hawaii Diabetes Research Center, developing novel therapeutic approaches to improve sustained kidney health. Brandon is excited to return to his first passion of swimming, where he can promote healthy living through personal fitness, social connection, and community engagement.
